Mount Meru

Meru rises directly from Arusha National Park. The first steps pass giraffe, buffalo and colobus habitat; the last follow a volcanic ridge toward Socialist Peak.

01
Best trekking period

June to October and December to February generally provide drier conditions.

02
Walking rhythm

Usually 4–7 hours daily, with a long pre-dawn summit and descent day.

03
Getting there

Around 1 hour from Arusha to Momella Gate.

04
Time to allow

4 trekking days is the more comfortable choice.

The character

A mountain that begins on safari.

A dramatic volcanic trek inside Arusha National Park, with wildlife on the lower slopes and a narrow summit ridge above the crater.

A steep and substantial climb. Ranger accompaniment is required because the route begins in wildlife habitat.

Choose four days when possible. The additional night makes the rhythm calmer and leaves more room for acclimatisation.

The route unfolds

From the first step to the high point.

01

Momella Gate

Open grassland and forest begin the ascent with an armed park ranger.

02

Miriakamba Hut

The forest thins and the crater walls begin to define the view.

03

Saddle Hut

A short acclimatisation walk to Little Meru prepares legs and lungs.

04

Socialist Peak

A pre dawn ridge climb reveals the ash cone and, in clear weather, Kilimanjaro.

Decision ready

Know what the mountain asks of you.

Weather

Forest can be damp; the upper ridge is exposed, windy and very cold before sunrise.

Altitude and outcome

The summit is lower than Kilimanjaro but the ascent is steep. A four-day schedule offers a more measured approach than a compressed three-day climb.

Safety and pacing

Daily health checks, conservative pacing, hydration and immediate response to altitude symptoms matter more than speed.
